Clarkesville is the county seat for Habersham County. One of Habersham's oldest towns, Clarkesville was chartered in 1823 and named for John Clark, governor of Georgia from 1819-1823. Clarkesville is home to the county courthouse and other government offices.

Clarkesville was also a summer resort town, catering to coastal families who wanted to escape the heat and diseases of the low-lying areas. Visitors can stop by the Mauldin house, an old homestead, now a Chamber of Commerce information center.
